about
In the build up to midterm elections, the news cycle was full of shootings, fires, so much loss. While we in California prayed for rain to ease the smoky skies and halt the destruction of peoples’ homes and lives, the radio was full of mass shootings, always asking after the motive of the shooter. What was their motive. Is this really the question to be asking? Hate, desperation, disconnectedness, when a culture, or government doesn’t really take care of it’s people, people are disconnected and disassociated from one another and themselves. I’d rather listen to the falling rain we so desperately need. It’s dark out there.
lyrics
I can’t stick to a schedule it seems
I move slowly in and out of my dreams
I wake and fall back into bed
I tell myself its the rain
It’s coming, and the day is dark again
I hear gunshots, the news is bad
I get the feeling that we’re all being had
There’s fire and smoke and the laws are broke
How do we push back the rain
It’s coming and the day is dark again
CH all i hear is the radio
let me hear the rain
its a news cyclone
verbal hurricane
all i hear is the radio
oh let me hear the rain
trapped in a vacuum
news cyclone hurricane
Tunnels of money under river of souls
The borders are broken their stories left un-told
The sun has taken off running
I tell myself its the rain
It’s coming, and the days are dark again
CH all i hear is the radio
let me hear the rain
its a news cyclone
verbal hurricane
all i hear is the radio
oh let me hear the rain
trapped in a vacuum
news cyclone hurricane
Build a fire, take off the chill
Look for the way even if there is no will
Fire, smoke, laws broke
How do we push back the rain
It keeps coming and the day is dark again
CH all i hear is the radio
oh let me hear the rain
its a news cyclone
verbal hurricane
all i hear is the radio
oh let me hear the rain
trapped in a vacuum
news cyclone hurricane
Let the words empty out of my head
Stare out the window and watch the sky
Just a little bit lighter than it was in the night
I tell myself its the rain

The polyrhythmic heat and funk of Evie Ladin's clawhammer banjo, resonant voice, real stories and rhythmic dance - have been
heard from A Prairie Home Companion to Celtic Connections, Lincoln Center to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. The Evie Ladin Band is an expansive stringband, with Keith Terry - bass and percussion, and Erik Pearson - guitar. Body-slappin neo-trad urban folk....more
Powerful collection rooted in the stories that must be re-told. Played by some of the most generous community music people I’ve met during my foray into Old Time music.
This CD is a keeper! Ellen B. (Elly) Marshall
I have listened to bluegrass and old-timey style banjo music for many years. Nora Brown has the most poetic interpretation of these styles that I have heard so far. She is the John Fahey of banjo (but also with striking vocals). brit_b
Great choice of music, expertly played and sung. Nicely produced. I hope to see The Onlies live, asap. This is an album I listen to over and over. Karamogo
Bright and skipping songs that foreground the sound of the banjo and fingerstyle guitar in music that feels timeless. Bandcamp New & Notable Oct 5, 2020
