about
All American families save Natives arrived here from elsewhere, many of them fleeing persecution, needing to find a new home, and by necessity leaving everything behind. It is a common story of human migration, often forced at the hands of those in power. At the end of the day, it is a difficult place to be, starting anew, away from everything you’ve ever known. It’s heartbreaking and challenging to leave it all behind, heading into an unknown with no firm footing, yet the resolve to start anew. This is the American story, common all over the world as war and disasters displace people daily.
lyrics
Late in the evening when the sun is all gone
I put up my work and head up for home
But supper’s not waiting in a pot on the stove
This is not how my story goes
No, this is not how my story should go
But men play their war games and our lives are sold
So I earn dollars, send them back home
Late in the evening when the sun is all gone
CH Late in the evening when the sun is on fire
Burns the horizon like a jumpin live wire
I look at my hands, will they carry me on?
Late in the evening when the sun is all gone
INST
One day to another, we’re trying to survive
For us to eat, they eat us alive
I learn a new language, still they spit out my name
the jobs they don’t want, they don’t want me to take
When I save enough I’ll bring you here
Its not what we’re aiming for but a little bit nearer
and when in this country our children are born
they’ll have one foot in the door
CH: Late in the evening when I lay down to rest
I thought i’d be doing better, and this isn’t my best
Stars in the east Lord I wish I was home
Late in the evening when the sun is all gone
I look at my hands, will they carry me on?
Late in the evening when the sun is all gone

Powerful collection rooted in the stories that must be re-told. Played by some of the most generous community music people I’ve met during my foray into Old Time music.
This CD is a keeper! Ellen B. (Elly) Marshall

I have listened to bluegrass and old-timey style banjo music for many years. Nora Brown has the most poetic interpretation of these styles that I have heard so far. She is the John Fahey of banjo (but also with striking vocals). brit_b

Great choice of music, expertly played and sung. Nicely produced. I hope to see The Onlies live, asap. This is an album I listen to over and over. Karamogo
